They’re using techniques that feel productive and mostly aren’t.

Here’s the split.

What works

1. Retrieval: close the book

Put the notes away. Write down everything you can remember. Then check what you missed.

It feels worse than rereading. That’s the point — the effort of pulling something out of memory is what makes it stick. Reading it again just feels smooth, and smooth isn’t learning.

2. Spacing: same hours, more days

Three hours tonight and three hours spread across six days are not the same three hours.

The spread version wins, consistently, and it isn’t close. Every time you come back after forgetting a little, you strengthen the memory more than an uninterrupted block ever could.

3. Interleaving: mix the problem types

Twenty of the same question teaches you to repeat a procedure.

Twenty mixed questions teach you to choose a procedure — which is the actual skill the test measures. Blocked practice feels better because your accuracy is higher. Your accuracy is higher because you already knew which method to use before you read the question. The test won’t tell you.

What doesn’t

4. Highlighting

You end up with a colorful page you have still never recalled anything from. Highlighting marks what matters; it doesn’t move it into memory. It’s an organizing activity wearing a studying costume.

5. Rereading

This is the most common trap in studying, and the reason is a specific glitch: your brain reads fluency as knowledge.

The third pass feels easy. Easy feels like mastery. Then the question is phrased differently on the test and nothing comes.

Familiar is not the same as known. Almost every student who says “I studied so hard and still bombed it” was rereading.

The one-line version

If a study technique feels comfortable, be suspicious of it. The ones that work feel like effort, because they are effort — that’s what’s doing the work.

Swap one hour of rereading for one hour of closed-book recall this week and see what happens.

Three study habits backed by decades of research, and two popular ones that mostly produce the feeling of studying.
