It didn’t. Here’s what it actually measured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The SAT is not a pure measure of intelligence, and it was never designed to be one. It’s a standardized test \u2014 which means it has to be reproducible, which means it has to be patterned<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Patterned things have rules. And the rules are consistent enough that they can be learned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Wrong answers aren’t random. They’re written to be attractive to someone who made a specific, predictable mistake. Once you can spot which mistake a given decoy was built for, you can often eliminate it without fully solving the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Hard questions telegraph themselves. Position in a section, phrasing, the shape of the answer choices \u2014 all of it signals difficulty before you start working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And the clock is part of the test. Every minute spent on a question you were going to miss is a minute stolen from a question you’d have gotten. Knowing when to leave is a scored skill, even though nobody teaches it that way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They aren’t smarter. They found out earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Someone told them \u2014 an older sibling, a school with a strong prep culture, a tutor, a parent who’d been through it. They got the ruleset handed to them, and it looks from the outside like natural ability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It’s information asymmetry. That’s all it is. And information asymmetries close the moment someone tells you the thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It’s a read on two things: how much content you’ve mastered, and how much of the ruleset you’ve seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Most students assume a disappointing score is entirely the first one. Usually a meaningful chunk of it is the second \u2014 and the second is far faster to fix, because you’re not learning three years of math, you’re learning how a test behaves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If your score has ever felt like a verdict, it isn’t. It’s a snapshot of how much of the game you’d seen at the moment you sat down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You can see more of it.
