Late August is a hinge point in test prep, and almost nobody treats it like one. Here’s what it means depending on which grade is sitting at your kitchen table.

If you have a senior

The fall test dates are the last ones that will produce a score in time for early deadlines.

That’s the whole situation. Whatever score gets submitted in November is being built right now — in the next several weeks — not in the panic window after the first application goes out.

The practical move: decide this week whether you’re testing again at all. If yes, the prep window is short enough that it has to be targeted. There is no time for an even pass through a prep book. Find the two or three most expensive gaps and work only on those.

If no, that’s a legitimate answer, and making the decision deliberately is better than drifting into it in October.

If you have a junior

The PSAT/NMSQT is in October, and it does two different jobs.

For a small number of students it’s a National Merit conversation. Worth knowing whether your child is plausibly in that range — the threshold varies by state and it’s easy to find out.

For everyone else, and this is the bigger deal, it’s the first honest read. Not a practice test taken at the kitchen table with the phone nearby. Real conditions, real timing, real score.

Junior fall is also the cheapest moment in the whole timeline to fix something. A gap identified in October has a full year of runway. The same gap found in April has ten weeks and a deadline attached.

If you have a sophomore

You have the asset the other two families would pay for, and you’re the most likely to waste it: time.

Nothing is urgent, which is exactly why sophomore year is where the advantage is built. Thirty minutes a week, consistently, quietly outperforms a frantic spring — and costs a fraction of what crisis tutoring costs.

The move isn’t test prep yet. It’s finding out where the gaps are while there’s still time for that information to be cheap.
